🥢 Yatai Ramen × Pang Exotic: Mark’s Retirement Story
Located on University Dr in Tempe, there is a well-known Japanese ramen spot many ASU students are familiar with — Yatai Ramen. The restaurant was founded by chef Mark Kondo, who originally began his culinary career in New York at Benihana before dedicating years to Japanese cuisine and eventually building his own ramen concept in Arizona.
“Yatai” in Japanese refers to a traditional street food stall — a symbol of simple, authentic, and heartfelt food culture. Mark brought that spirit to Tempe, turning what began as a humble food truck into a beloved local ramen shop on University Dr.
🍜 The Beginning of Yatai Ramen in Tempe
Yatai Ramen first started as a food truck before eventually establishing a permanent location in Tempe. The concept focused on slow-cooked broths and authentic Japanese ramen styles such as tonkotsu and shoyu, where every bowl reflects patience, craftsmanship, and consistency.
Over the years, it quietly became one of those “hidden gem” ramen spots near ASU — known by locals, students, and anyone who appreciates genuine Japanese comfort food.
🎉 Mark’s Retirement & A Special Farewell Moment
After years of running the restaurant, Mark decided to step into the next chapter of his life — retirement.
Around this moment, our Pang Exotic team did something simple but meaningful:
We brought our Rolls-Royce Wraith to the restaurant and met Mark at Yatai Ramen for a few photos — creating a small, informal “Pang Exotic team moment” to celebrate his journey.
It wasn’t a formal event or commercial collaboration. It was simply a gesture of appreciation.
A thank you to someone who spent years serving honest, well-crafted ramen to the community.
đźš— A Small Moment from Pang Exotic
For us, this wasn’t just another shoot or car appearance. It represented:
A local business owner closing a meaningful chapter
A neighborhood restaurant that became part of the community
A quiet but powerful moment of transition and respect
Seeing the Rolls-Royce parked on University Dr next to a ramen shop felt like two completely different worlds meeting in one frame — yet sharing the same foundation:
Time, craft, and consistency are what make things truly memorable.
📸 Closing
This wasn’t a staged production or a commercial campaign. It was a simple afternoon — a car, a restaurant, a retiring chef, and a few people choosing to capture a moment that mattered.
Happy retirement, Mark. 🍜
